In this 2 hour workshop you will learn how to make your own chemical-free soap using natural and local ingredients. Homemade soap also makes a great personal and cost effective gift.

As soap is something we use on a daily basis why not design your own to ensure that you know exactly what it is made of! Commercially made soap is often created using unnecessary chemical additives simply to achieve foam, aroma and colour, however, the long-term consequences of using such ingredients are many and unpleasant.

Soap in its simplest form is a combination of lyes and fats/oils which are taken through a process called saponification. You can use a range of oils, natural colourings, clays and fragrances to ensure that the final product is designed to your individual preferences. Find out how additives such as woodash, fruit or herbs from your own home or garden can be used to create personal and unique blends in the future.

What you’ll learn – On the day you will learn the “cold” process of creating your very own soap using natural ingredients.

Take home – Your own soap mold, the knowledge and recipes to make the soaps again and again, and your very own soap handcrafted on the day.

About the educator – The workshop will be taught by Margaret Mossakowska, permaculturist, active Crop Swap Sydney member and founder of Moss House.

The idea of Moss House grew from her desire to reconnect with her roots, to wonderful childhood days spent in rural Poland, tending her family vegetable garden, foraging for wild herbs and mushrooms and in Autumn preserving hundreds of jars full of Summer harvests. This is when she acquired homesteading skills, which she has spent her life cultivating, both as she raised a family and during years working in the corporate world.

Her passion for healthy, natural living lead her to share her knowledge and skills with others through workshops that are designed to empower participants and increase their confidence to live healthier and more sustainable lives.

What to bring – As we will be working with lyes that can burn if not used correctly, please wear protective clothing: enclosed shoes, apron, kitchen gloves and long sleeves. For this reason children under 12 cannot be accommodated on this workshop.

Natural, home-made soap is a great alternative for your family and is fun and easy to make. Soapmaking truly is a skill worth learning!
