Pocket City Farms Swap – Feb 11, 2017

Our February swap at Pocket City Farms was set to be a HOT one – with weather forecasts predicting 38 degrees, the farm kindly offered us the use of the air conditioned common room. Despite the heat, a small but dedicated crowd turned up to swap.  We even had growers travel from as far as Wolli creek, North Strathfield and Pyrmont!

Something that I have often thought about after our meetings is how surprisingly considerate people are, more so than they would be as a paying customer in a supermarket. The fact that you can still end up with surplus produce, that is already excess to its growers needs, amazes me!So, in an attempt to reduce food waste even further we have partnered with The Food Pantry in Marrickville who now collect any excess from our Sydney Inner-West workshops. This produce is then provided free of charge to people in need.  This February meeting marked the first collection for The Food Pantry and the feedback was fantastic.  A dedicated box will be on the table at subsequent meetings.

Some of the items swapped on the day were:
Borlotti bean seedlings
Kale
Aloe Vera
Beetroot seeldings
Chillies – jalapeño and birds eye
Sweet potato tubers and leaves
Fresh basil
Sage & Thyme
Bay leaves
Lemongrass
Cut celery
Banana leaves
Gardening magazines
Limes and kaffir lime leaves
Curry leaves
Happy patties – Cow manure
Jewels of opar plants
Purslane
Lemon rose geranium
Amaranth
Variegated mother of herb
